Local History Resources
In the 1960s, the Library began to collect material pertaining to the history of Richmond Hill and the surrounding area to mark Canada's centennial.
Since then, the local history collection has grown considerably and currently includes published histories, family histories, scrapbooks, private manuscrpts, historical atlases, photographs, periodicals, and a vertical file containing newspaper clippings, old Spring Fair brochures, pamphlets, local newsletters, and more.
The Local History Room is also pleased to house the past issues of Richmond Hill's local newspaper, The Liberal. The complete run of the newspaper from 1878 to the present is available on microfilm
Community Histories
Richmond Hill Photo Images, the Library's collection of historical photographs includes photos of local schools, churches, businesses, residences, and streetscapes, as well as shots of early local families has been digitized and is available online.
Many of the Library's photographs can be found in Early Days in Richmond Hill and Later Days in Richmond Hill. Patrons with a specific request for a photograph should contact the Local History & Genealogy Librarian at 905.884.9288 x320.
A collection of over 50 binders containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and other information documenting the history of Richmond Hill. Topics include organizations, industries, schools, churches, recreation, and transportation. Refer to the complete list of topics covered by the scrapbooks for more information.
Vertical Files
  • The vertical file consists of pamphlets, brochures, family manuscripts, newsletters, clippings, directories, and other ephemera related to the history of Richmond Hill and York Region.
  • Among the subject areas subject areas covered are: donated family histories; Richmond Hill business directories; Spring Fair brochures; lists of Richmond Hill mayors and councilors; and newsletters of local organizations, such as the Richmond Hill Historical Society.
Except for the current six months of The Liberal, all newspaper holdings are available on microfilm only. A complete run of The Liberal from 1878 to the present is available, as well as other early newspapers.
