In the summer of 2002, aided by a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Culture, Library staff began an ambitious project to photograph and organize images of historic tombstones in this area. 19th century tombstones, in particular, carry a wealth of information, not just about the individual commemorated, but about the mores, customs and sometimes even the history of the community of the time.
Beginning with the Headford United Church and Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church cemeteries, it now includes Holy Trinity Cemetery, St. Luke's Roman Catholic Cemetery and Thornhill Community Cemetery, this database will allow researchers to search for burial sites by family names.
The database provides full images of each tombstone along with transcriptions of texts carved on them. Besides being a useful resource for genealogists and history students, these images help preserve the form and content of these historic grave markers from the damaging effects of environmental pollution such as acid rain.
