Kids Programs
The library offers a variety of programs for children and their families from birth through to grade eight at all four locations. Follow the links for descriptions and other information relating to these events.

Registration for the Winter 2019 programs will begin on Monday November 26th at 9:30AM.

Please note: Children must be the correct age for the program they are registering for at the start of the program.
Children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by an adult to the program room for drop-off and pick-up due to security concerns.

  • Art Adventurers: 5 - 8
    Bring out your inner artist with a new art project every month. Make Eric Carle-inspired animals and a cubist spring scene. Dig in and start making with your hands in mixed media! A new project every month so put your creativity hat on.
  • Beeswax Candles: Ages 6-8
    Learn all about bees while rolling an elegant candle from two coloured strips of beeswax.
  • Board Game Café: Ages 5+ (Family)
    Drop by the Richmond Green Library for an evening of board games and fun! Play an old favourite or learn a brand new one.
  • Cardboard Creations with MakeDo: 7-10 years
    Using the MakeDo tools the children will design and create their own cardboard creations.
  • Celebrate Family Literacy with Music by Jake: Family
    Join us for an interactive musical performance with Juno Award Nominee - Jake Differ
  • Chess Classes: Beginner: 6-12 years
    Learn to play or improve your chess game. Master the chess moves and learn the importance of each piece.

  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Storytime : Ages 3 - 5
    A fun-filled 45 minute program with alphabet stories, songs, fun activities and a take away creation that kids will make.
  • Chinese New Year Party: All Ages
    Join us for our Chinese New Year Party! We have crafts, games, activities, and a scavenger hunt to ring in the Year of the Pig!
  • Crafty Spring Fling: Family (Ages 7+)
    Gather the whole family together for an amazingly fun night of spring-themed crafts and home decorations. Everyone will have the ability to make an item to welcome spring from dahlia wreaths to sun catchers!
  • Creative Hands Maker Space: All Ages
    Come create with us! Join us for a story along with free art time. Bring your ideas. We’ll bring the supplies! Different themes each month.
  • Cursive Writing Workshop: Ages 8+
    Learn the ancient art of cursive writing and how to create your own unique signature.
  • Diaper Derby: Crawlers (up to 16 months) with caregiver
    Does your baby crawl? How about faster than other babies? Let’s have the cutest race this library has ever seen. Enter your baby (crawling only) in our very first diaper derby and meet other parents and babies. No obligation to compete.
  • Discovery Lab: 4-5 years
    Once a month for 4 Saturdays children will have fun discovering and learning through a variety of fun activities.
    One program will be music, another art, another math and lastly science.
  • Dream Jar: 5+ years
    Dream big! Come and make your own magical Dream Jar where you can store dreams, wishes and happy memories.
  • Earth Day Fun: 6-9 years
    Join us for some Earth Day fun! We will be planting seeds and creating our own trees from recycled materials.
  • Exploration Station: 5 - 8
    Grow your passion for science and more with hands-on activities to make you go "ick" and "wow." We'll make at least one project you can take home to impress your friends and family.
  • Exploring Colours Together: Ages 3-5
    Come to the library for an hour of stories and sensory activities. Parents and children will explore together and learn about colours. Please wear clothing you can get messy in!
  • Family Winter Craft-a-thon: All Ages (Family)
    Enjoy a family maker evening at the library! You will be given all the supplies and hands-on instruction for the creation of a unique wreath and homemade holiday cards. The whole family can contribute and participate in this fun, festive evening.
  • Fantastic Beasts in the Library: Ages 7+ (Family)
    Experience Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them before the latest movie is released! Newt Scamander's magic suitcase full of fantastic beasts has been opened in the Richmond Green Library.

  • Folded Book Art: Lantern DIY: Ages 10-13
    Repurposing and recycling books into a hanging lantern.
  • Fun with Snap Circuits: 8 - 12 years
    Snap Circuits are a fun and easy way to learn about electronics and circuitry. Get hands-on experience snapping together interesting projects like sound-activated alarms, flashing lights, fans, musical doorbells, and more!
  • Gamemaking with Scratch by Code Mobile: 6-9 years & 10-12 years
    From Checkers to Tag to Angry Birds---games are everywhere! As a group we’ll explore a basic game-design process (from idea, to execution to testing) to brainstorm and build your very own game.
  • Glow in the Dark Storytime: Ages 3 - 6
    Join us for a storytime full of darkness, followed by a maker activity full of light!
  • Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss: All Ages
    Come join us honouring the 115th Birthday of Dr. Seuss. There will be stories, games crafts and CAKE (because if there’s a birthday party, there is always cake!!)
  • Holiday Games: 7-9 years
    The holidays are not over yet!
    Join us as we play various games based on holidays from around the world.
  • Homework Help Buddies for Newcomers: Grade 4 - 8
    This program will match newcomer students in grades 4-8 with high school volunteers who will meet with them weekly to offer subject specific homework help and skill enriching activities
  • Hour of Code Family Fun Night: Family
    Celebrate Family Literacy Day by making your own online game. Families will work together to program games using the free Hopscotch coding app.
  • Lego Block Party: Ages 6 -12
    Meet new friends and build whatever your mind can conjure with the Library’s LEGO collection.
  • Little Bits: 9-12 years
    Enjoy a hands-on and interactive program using Little Bits. Ignite your curiosity and engage in active inquiry and problem solving with different challenges each class.
  • Little Red Rocket Ship – A Puppet Show!: Ages 3-9
    Join Applefun Puppetry for a 45-minute interactive program. Afterwards, everyone learns how to make a paper puppet to take home.
  • Little Scientists: 2 - 5
    Explore science and engineering concepts through songs, stories, art, and activities in a STEM storytime. Each session will follow a theme.
  • Lunar New Year Make & Take Fun: 4+ years
    Celebrate the Year of the Pig.
    Make a paper lantern and other festive crafts to take home.
  • Magic Show with Kyle Livingston: Ages 4+
    With a wave of his wand, you’ll be amazed, amused and astounded by Magician Kyle.

    Design your own mobile to decorate your room!
  • Make Some Noise – Exploring Music and Sound: Ages 5-8
    Learn about the science behind music and sound, and make some awesome DIY instruments!
  • March Break - 60 Seconds 2 Win: 10-13 years
    With 60 seconds on the clock, you are asked to complete weird and challenging tasks.
  • March Break - Arms Length Puppets Present “The Spider Prince”: All Ages (Family)
    Prince Harry, who discovers Mizard the Wizard's greediness for the king's gold, is transformed into a spider and depends on Princess Margaret and the children in the audience to save him. An interactive puppet show with a few surprises!
  • March Break - Cousin Molly Music Show: Family
    Enjoy a colourful and entertaining learning experience with Cousin Molly.
    She will share stories and songs in this hands-on show that will get all ages singing and playing.
  • March Break - DIY Board Games: 7-9 years
    You’ve played many board games now create your own.
    You never know, your game may be a great big hit!
  • March Break - Forest Trek – a Puppet Show! : Ages 3+
    Join Applefun Puppetry for a fun and exciting puppet show; meet the “star” puppets after and learn how to make a paper puppet of your own!
  • March Break - Kids Learn Code with Scratch Junior: 5-7 years with an adult
    Kids and their caregivers can join us for an introductory coding class with Scratch Junior. Kids will learn to create their own interactive stories, games and animation using the Scratch Junior App.
  • March Break - Little Red Theatre presents - The Snow Queen: 5-11 years
    Little Red Theatre takes the simple lesson of growing up from Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen and fills it with unique and special mysteries.
  • March Break - Mad Science – Spin, Pop, Boom!: Ages 4 - 12
    This thrilling and interactive performance will explore a combination of chemistry and physics, including a colour change demonstration, exothermic reactions, a bungee jumping glass bottle, and more!
  • March Break - Paw Patrol Fun: 4-6 years
    Celebrate Ryder and the Paw Patrol pups with stories songs and fun activities.
  • March Break - Spy Camp: 6 - 12
    Calling all spies! You`re needed at spy camp to crack codes, make an identification card and a secret decoder, and write your own secret messages. Then use your spy skills for a scavenger hunt.
  • March Break - Super Science Special Event Show: 5-10 years
    The Super Science Show is a high energy performance; including a dry ice demonstration, bubbling potions, chemical reactions and much more.
  • March Break - WonderPhil Magic Show: 4-11 years
    WonderPhil will amaze, amuse and astound you with his magical illusions.
    There will be lots of audience participation as he fascinates you with his magic.

    The March Break Maker Kick-Off returns for the third year in a row! Explore amazingly fun technologies, games, and creations that are sure to make you say, "WOW!"

  • PA Day – Draw Your Story: Ages 7 - 11
    Children will be read a story without being allowed to see the pictures. They must draw their own illustrations. Only at the end will the original book images be revealed.
  • PA Day - Let’s Make Sock Puppets: 7-11 years
    Create your own whimsical sock puppet. Then practice your puppeteering skills adding voice and movement to bring your character to life.
  • PA Day - Winter Wonders: Ages 4-12
    Explore a variety of winter wonders this PA Day! Visit the Oak Ridges Library to join the fun.
  • PA Day Exploration Station: Ages 5 - 8

  • Pop Up MakerSpace for Kids: All Ages
    The Pop Up MakerSpace for Kids is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
    Drop in to see demos of 3D printing, coding activities, robotics, and other new and exciting emerging technologies.

  • Python Computer Programming - Intermediate: 10-13 years
    Students will learn to be more comfortable coding in Python while taking advantage of the language’s unique features. They will also learn about more advanced coding concepts such as objects and functions.
  • Python Computer Programming - Introductory: 10-13 years
    Students will learn how to write code using Python and the unique features of language. They will gain knowledge of fundamental coding concepts such as loops and conditional statement.
  • Reading Buddies: Grades 1 - 3
    Children meet weekly with a teen volunteer to read and play literacy games. This program offers children an accepting environment to practice their reading skills and make new friends. Discover how much fun reading can be!

  • Red Cross Babysitting Course: 11-15 years
    Learn basic first aid and caregiving skills in this one day babysitting course presented by the Canadian Red Cross.
  • Robin Hood and the Dragon - A Puppet Show!: Ages 3-9
