Kids Programs
The library offers a variety of programs for children and their families from birth through to grade eight at all four locations. Follow the links for descriptions and other information relating to these events.

Registration for our Spring/Summer Programs will begin on Monday April 9th at 9:30AM

Please note: Children must be the correct age for the program they are registering for at the start of the program.
Children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by an adult to the program room for drop-off and pick-up due to security concerns.

  • Arm’s Length Puppetry presents The Loathsome Dragon : Family
    A king and his lovely daughter are very close. Then, the king falls in love with a beautiful but wicked enchantress who, in a jealous rage, turns the princess into a dragon.
  • Baby Sign Language: 0-24 months with caregiver
    Learn some of the most handy signs you can use with your baby to help them communicate their needs to you.
  • Big Kid Entertainment Presents Hansel & Gretel: 4+ years
    Hansel & Gretel return to the “maison de bonbons.” Come visit the famous candy house, the Witch, a talking broccoli, the Healthy Baker and a very special guest.
  • Board Game Café: Ages 5+ (Family)
    Drop by the Richmond Green Library for an evening of board games and fun! Play an old favourite or learn a brand new one.
  • Board Game Drop-in: Ages 5 and up
    Drop by the Oak Ridges Library for an afternoon of board games and fun!
  • Book Mania Street Fair!: All Ages (Family)
    Celebrate your favourite books and characters in honour of this year’s TD Summer Reading Club. Activities, games, and more will be available for fans of Pete the Cat, Peppa Pig, Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, and of course…HARRY POTTER!
  • Books Before Looks (a L.I.G.H.T. program): 7-12 years
    Focuses on literacy and body image while teaching the importance of self-acceptance and diversity in literature.
  • Chess Classes: Beginner: 6-12 years
    Learn to play or improve your chess game. Master the chess moves and learn the importance of each piece.
  • Chess Classes: Intermediate I: 6 - 12 years
    Learn to play or improve your chess game. Master the chess moves and learn the importance of each piece.
  • Chess Classes: Intermediate II and Advanced: 6-12 years
    Learn to play or improve your chess game. Master the chess moves and learn the importance of each piece.
  • Comic Book Day: 3-8 years
    Join us for a superhero celebration with fun games, crafts and activities. Come in and test your own super powers!
  • Computer Programming - Java: 10-13 years
    The Java program will introduce the world of computer programming. Students will learn how to write code in Java and the unique features of the language such as its portability.
  • Computer Programming - Python: 10-13 years
    The Python program will introduce to children the world of computer programming. Students will learn how to write code in Python and the unique features of the language such as dynamic typing.
  • Computer Programming - Stencyl: 10-13 years
    This course is now full, please add your name to our waitlist.
    In this course students will be introduced to computer language and how to use Stencyl to create their own computer game.
  • Creative Hands Maker Space: All Ages
    Come create with us! Join us for some free art time. Bring your ideas. We’ll bring the supplies! Each month has a different theme.
  • Dance Party: Family
    Come Jam with Jenn for a hippin’ good time of dance, music and stories!
  • Earth Day Fun: 6-10 years
    Decorate your own pet rock! Make a nature decoration with clay.
  • Elephant & Piggie Storytime: Ages 3 - 7
    Elephant & Piggie make learning fun! We’ll read some stories, dance, and do some maker activities!
  • Escape the Room of Requirement!: 10+
    You along with your family and friends are trapped in the Room of Requirement at the famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! In teams of 4 to 6 people, figure out the clues to escape before Harry Potter and his friends run into trouble!
  • Exploration Station: Ages 5 - 8
    Grow your passion for science and more with hands-on activities to make you go “Ick!” and “Wow!” We will make at least one project you can take home to impress your friends and family.
  • Family Trivia Night: Ages 6+
    Test your smarts! Bring a team or just yourself. You don’t need to know it all, questions will be general knowledge.
  • Father’s Day Make & Take: Family
    Join us in the Children's Department and create something awesome for Dad!
  • FIRST LEGO League Jr. Robotics - 8 weeks: 6-9 years
    Build and code wireless robots with the new LEGO WeDo 2.0 kits.
  • FIRST LEGO League Jr. Robotics - Intermediate - 4 weeks: 6-9 years
    Build and code wireless robots with LEGO WeDo 2.0 kits.
  • FIRST LEGO League Jr. Robotics - Intermediate - 8 weeks: 7-10 years
    With teammates, engineer creative solutions to challenges using our LEGO WeDo kits.
  • Food Picassos: Ages 4 - 8
    Unleash your inner artist and foodie! Create with fruits, vegetables, cereal, chocolates, and candy!
  • Fun with Science : 4-6 years
    Co-sponsored by YMCA Ontario Early Years Participate in activities that encourage your child’s curiosity & scientific inquiries [includes kids & their parents]
  • Fun with Snap Circuits: 8 - 12 years
    Snap Circuits are a fun and easy way to learn about electronics and circuitry. Get hands-on experience snapping together interesting projects like sound-activated alarms, flashing lights, fans, musical doorbells, and more!
  • Get Growing! Gardening Lab: Ages 5 - 8
    Turn your child’s thumb green at this introduction to gardening. The program will be indoors, but hands-on and close to plants and dirt.
  • Get Together with your Story Book Pals: 4-6 years
    If you like Elephant and Piggie, Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus, Pete the cat and Duck and Goose then join us for stories, games and other activities.
  • Happy Mother’s Day!: 3+ years
    Join us as we celebrate our moms with stories and activities. Make a Mother’s Day gift to show mom just how special she is!
  • Homework Help Buddies : Grade 4-8
    This program will match elementary students in grades 4-8 with high school volunteers who will meet with them weekly to offer subject specific homework help and skill enriching activities.
    The target audience for this program is newcomer students who could use some help with in the subject of English, science, French, or math. This program is offered in partnership with L.I.G.H.T, a grassroots organization and platform that provides opportunities for youth to drive change and design community initiatives.
  • I Love Mo!: 3+ years
    Enjoy the world of Mo Willems through stories, songs and fun activities then create a funny character from Mo’s stories.
  • I’m off to Kindergarten!: 3-5 years
    Starting kindergarten is an exciting time.
    Join us for stories, songs and activities. This program is designed to help children be independent, in preparation for their first Days of school.
  • Kite-making Workshop: 7-10 years
    Have you ever wanted to design and fly your own kite? Come to the Oak Ridges Library to learn how!
  • Learn to Code with Scratch Jr.: 5-7 years
    Join us for an introductory coding class for kids.
    With Scratch Jr App kids will learn to create their own interactive stories, games and animation using the library’s iPads.
  • Lego Block Party: Ages 6 -12
    Meet new friends and build whatever your mind can conjure with the Library’s LEGO collection.
  • Lego Club: 4-12 years
    Join us for a building challenge with the library’s Lego collection!
  • Mad Science Workshop - Discover your Passion: 6-9 years
    Join us for this new, interactive workshop featuring different branches of science!
    Junior scientists will participate in exciting, hands-on experiments and activities.
  • Mad Science Workshop - Space Technology: 7-10 years
    Explore space-related technologies used on Earth, including laser light, radar and more, and in outer space with an examination of potential threats to spacecraft. Then, build your own comet to take home!
  • Magician Kyle Livingston: 4+ years
    With the wave of his wand, you will be amazed, amused and astounded by Magician Kyle.
  • Make It Green! Gardening Lab: Ages 8 - 12
    Explore the natural world around you and learn how to make something for your garden at home. The program will be indoors, but hands-on and close to plants and dirt
  • Meet Author Echo Liu: Family
    Join us in the Children’s Department for a storytime with Author Echo Liu who will read from her books
    “The Way to Dance, The Way to Forgive” and “The Homesick Plastic Bag” in both Mandarin and English.
  • Messy Science Fun: Family
    Join us for a variety of messy science play stations. And we do the clean up! Please come dressed to be a mess, both the little people and the big people!!
  • Mother’s Day Make & Take: Family
    Join us in the Children’s Department to create something special to take home.
  • Mother’s Day Make & Take (Oak Ridges): All ages
    Come make something special for mom and show her just how much you love her!
  • Movie Madness: Family Program
    Looking for a great way to spend an afternoon? Join us for Movie Madness at the Library!
    On Saturday April 14th we will be showing the movie “Ferdinand”
  • Musical Babies: Birth - 15 Months w/Adult
    Co-sponsored by EarlyON.
    This program encourages language and early literacy skills through the use of songs, nursery rhymes and musical experiences.
  • Out-Of-This-World Astronomy: All Ages (Family)
    Kids and adults – come discover some of the Astronomical wonders within our Solar System and Universe.
  • PA Day - CD Weaving Party: Ages 7 - 12
    Learn how to make something beautiful out of old CDs. Let’s see how many we can make to decorate our library!
  • PA Day - Twisted Ones: 4-11 years
    Join Debbie and her balloons for a show that is packed with incredible balloons, costumes, magic and cool music.
  • PA Day Code Mobile - Game Design with Scratch: 6-12 years
    From Checkers, to Tag to Angry Birds… games are everywhere! As a group we’ll explore a basic games design process (from idea, to execution, to testing) to brainstorm and build your very own game.

    Limit of 32 people per session.

  • Pawsitively Pets: 5-10 years
    Calling all animal lovers! Come to the library for an afternoon of furry, slimy, slithery fun. You’ll see and touch mammals, reptiles, and amphibians in this one-hour show.
  • Pop Up MakerSpace for Kids: All Ages
    The Pop Up MakerSpace for Kids is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
    Drop in to see demos of 3D printing, coding activities, robotics, and other new and exciting emerging technologies.

  • Reading Buddies: Grades 1 - 3
    Children meet weekly with a teen volunteer to read and play literacy games. This program offers children an accepting environment to practice their reading skills and make new friends. Discover how much fun reading can be!
  • Red Cross Babysitting Course: 11-15 years
    Learn basic first aid and caregiving skills in this one day babysitting course presented by the Canadian Red Cross.
  • Reptilia at Richmond Green: All Ages (Family)
    Would you like to meet a snake? How about a lizard? Stop by the library and meet some reptiles!
  • Robo Challenge: 8-9 years
    Program a min robot to do a certain task. Prepare to be challenged using the Ozobot Bit in races, mazes and games.
  • Scaredy Squirrel Storytime: Ages 3 - 7
    A special Scaredy Squirrel storytime with music, stories, and activities based on our favourite nervous squirrel.
  • Spring Flower Wreaths: 8-11 years
    Come learn how to make Spring Flowers from tissue paper and then use them to make your own colourful wreath!
  • Star Wars Day Party!: 5+
    Enjoy Star Wars Day one day early on May 3rd with your friends and family. You can train to be a Jedi, make paper action figures that you can take home, and play fun Star Wars games.
  • Story Drawing Workshop: 6-9 years
    If you like to draw and tell stories come out and draw a story about your favourite hobby or activity with local author and artist Nancy Hallas. Hands-on exercises and story drawing techniques will be shared.
  • Summer Writing Series with Author Marina Cohen: 10-13 years
    The Edge of Your Seat Writing Workshop Series
    In this four-part workshop, participants will learn how to craft suspenseful scenes.
  • TD Summer Reading Club - Central Launch Party: Preschool - Grade 8
    Drop-in and join us as we officially kick of the TD Summer Reading Club with activities, games and of course, cake!

    The Jurassic Park Institute is letting one of their instructors come to Richmond Green to teach about dinosaurs. But one the dangerous dinosaurs is on the loose! Can you save the library in time?
  • Tween Explosive Science!: Ages 9 - 13
    Learn the science behind how things can go boom, pop, and fizz! You will even get to enjoy the fizzy fun with your own hands!
  • Tween Summer Challenge: 9-12 years
    Join us for an egg-citing time with our Egg Drop Challenge, then design and build a better bubble blower plus more fun challenges!
  • Tween Zombie Survival Mission: Ages 9 - 13
    Join us at Richmond Green for a fun and spooky night that will give you the chills – even in the summer heat! Race through the library to establish a secure survival camp before the zombies break inside and infect the survivors.
  • Tweens - Monogram Decoration: 10-13 years
    Need some new ideas for decorating your room. Bring your creativity and make a monogram of your name using yarn. All supplies will be provided. Limit of 15.
  • Tweens Night - D.I.Y. Wreck this Journal: 10-14 years
    Rip it, stain it, drop it on the ground then get creative with the results!
  • Tweens Night - Ductigami: 10-14 years
    Using duct tape, create roses, jewelry, wallets, pencil cases and more!
  • Tweens Night - Improv Night: 10-14 years
    You are encouraged to act out, sing out and laugh out loud with prop comedy, lip synch battles and reverse charades.
  • Tweens Night - Poetically Speaking: 10-13 years
    Celebrate poetry month with paint chip poetry, black out poetry and leave with your own unique magnet poem.
  • Tweens Night - Potter Games: 10-14 years
    Wands up! Prepare for an evening of wizard games to celebrate Harry’s upcoming birthday.
  • We’re going on a Dragon Hunt!: 3+ years
    Enter the world of friendly dragons with an interactive story time, followed by the chance to create your own magical dragon’s egg. Feeling brave? Have your picture taken on our green screen with a dragon!
  • World Record Breakers: 7-10 years
    Are you able to break or make a world record? Be challenged at a variety of stations based on world records.
