Attention Richmond Hill Students: The 2017 Arts Contest is here

2017 Competition Theme

The 2017 Arts Contest is themed "Canada 150"! All entries will reflect this milestone anniversary.

A brief statement indicating how each submitted piece relates to the Canada 150 theme must be included with each submission along with the following guidelines.

Competition Rules

To be eligible to enter, participants must be in Grades 9-12 and live or go to school in Richmond Hill.

The immediate family members of Arts Contest judges, the Library Board, or Richmond Hill Public Library employees are not eligible.

Failure to follow the contest and submission guidelines or to provide complete, legible, and accurate information on the Entry Form will disqualify the submission.

Each entrant may submit a maximum of one entry per category.

All submissions in every category of the competition must be the original work of the submitting artist or writer.

Deadline extension: Submissions will now be accepted until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2017. Late entries will not be accepted.

Submission of Entries

Fill out the entry form electronically (typed out) and email it to artscontest@rhpl.ca

Print out the completed and typed entry form and sign the acknowledgment section.

Submissions must be hand-delivered to the Information Services Desk on the third floor of the Central Library. Contest submissions will be accepted until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2017.


Guidelines

Short Story Guidelines

  • Stories must be no longer than 1,500 words, printed double-spaced, on single-sided sheets, with pages numbered.
  • Two (2) copies of each story must be submitted with a separate cover sheet with the writer's name, the title of the work, and the word count.
  • Submissions must include a printout of the completed entry form, a description of how your piece reflects the Canada 150 theme, be placed in an envelope, and delivered to the Information Services Desk on the third floor of the Central Library, 1 Atkinson Street, Richmond Hill. Write your name, grade, and Short Story on the envelope.
  • An electronic copy of the entry form must also be emailed to artscontest@rhpl.ca

Poetry Guidelines

  • Poems must be no longer than 60 lines.
  • Two (2) copies of each poem must be submitted with a separate cover sheet with the writer's name, the title of the work and a description of how your piece reflects the Canada 150 theme.
  • Submissions must include a printout of the completed entry form, be placed in an envelope, and delivered to the Information Services Desk on the third floor of the Central Library, 1 Atkinson Street, Richmond Hill. Write your name, grade, and Poetry on the envelope.
  • An electronic copy of the entry form must also be emailed to artscontest@rhpl.ca

Visual Arts Guidelines

  • Artwork must be no larger than 24 x 30 inches in any medium (e.g. graphite, watercolour, ink, acrylic, oil, pastel, or charcoal).
  • Artwork must include documentation, including the title of the work, a description of the materials used, and a brief statement regarding the inspiration or meaning of the work and a description of how your piece reflects the Canada 150 theme.
  • Submissions must include a completed entry form and delivered to the Information Services Desk on the third floor of the Central Library, 1 Atkinson Street, Richmond Hill. Make sure that your entry form is secured to the artwork.
  • An electronic copy of the entry form must also be emailed to artscontest@rhpl.ca

Photography Guidelines

  • Physical submissions are required and must be at least 8 x 10 inches in size. Photographs may be in colour or black and white.
  • Photographs must include documentation, including the title of the work, a brief statement regarding the inspiration or meaning of the image and a description of how your piece reflects the Canada 150 theme.
  • Submissions must include a completed entry form, be placed in an envelope, and delivered to the Information Services Desk on the third floor of the Central Library, 1 Atkinson Street, Richmond Hill. Write your name, grade, and Photography on the envelope.
  • An electronic copy of the entry form must also be emailed to artscontest@rhpl.ca
While every effort is made to ensure that submissions are handled and stored with care, the Library assumes no liability for loss or damage.
It is the responsibility of each entrant to pick up his or her work by June 23, 2017. Items left after that time can be discarded at the discretion of the Library.

Prizes

1st Place, 2nd Place and Honourable Mention awards will be issued for each category. All winners will be published in the Richmond Hill Public Library Arts Contest Anthology, as well as on the Library website and social media.

Celebration

A celebration of the winners will take place at Richmond Hill Central Library on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

Pick-up of Visual Art & Photography

To pick up your artwork, please come to the 3rd floor Information Services Desk at Central Library. It is the responsibility of each entrant to pick up his or her work by Friday, June 23, 2017. Items left after that time can be discarded at the discretion of the Library.
